Chapter 6

Preston

WHILE PRISCILLA WORKED on her investigation with Cathy, I continued to look into the Ortega murder mystery that I botched up. The case was looking more and more dangerous, when I realized that someone had been murdered over a piece of jewelry. Yes, it was an expensive and rare piece of jewelry, which I figured the killer of Joseph Ortega had tried to pawn off on my unsuspecting and overly trusting wife. Sure she was one of the best female bounty hunters in the world, but when it came to people, she still had that sweet good-natured naivete about her.

She was so excited about her first case, she didn’t even suspect that her client may not be telling her the truth. Priscilla also bought into Olivia’s manipulation, believing Olivia’s complete tale of victimhood. Of course she would. Olivia was her client after all.

Olivia couldn’t possibly kill her own husband, who held her up on a pedestal. She couldn’t possibly want to find something that was very difficult to find, even to retrieve.

I didn’t want to tell Pris I suspected something was off with Harold, Joseph’s assistant. Not to mention Cindy Baker, the overly flirtatious clerk at Ortega’s jewelry store. Most of all, Olivia Ortega, the former beauty queen turned socialite.

But if you were in jail for murder, why would you hire a bounty hunter to investigate your case? I had no doubts about Priscilla’s ability to solve cases, but she was new to being a private investigator. New but not unresourceful. If I know anything about Priscilla it is that she is capable and highly competent. When she wants to get something done, she can.

I didn’t quite have Priscilla’s talent for finding things or investigating and found myself stumbling through more than I had expected. The case grew stranger the more I dug into it.

Finally with new information, I was eager to find Priscilla and let her in on what I’d found.

Arriving at Fort Concho, I parked across the street, and headed inside the administrative building. From down the corridor, I heard her sweet voice, light and delicate as she spoke to a man, no doubt Ray, the director. I followed the sound of her voice.

“How’s my favorite celebrity P.I.?” I said as I came to the open door. I nodded a greeting to Cathy and Ray who replied in kind.

“Preston,” Priscilla exclaimed as she jumped to her feet and hugged me. “What are you doing here?” She gave me a quick kiss on the lips.

“Thought you might be hungry,” I said. “There’s a Mexican restaurant nearby and I thought you could use a break.”

Priscilla looked to Cathy, who nodded as she stood. “Take the rest of the afternoon. We’re all done here for the moment.” She turned to Ray. “Thank you for everything.”

“My pleasure.” He nodded at Priscilla. “Good to see you, Preston.” Slapping my arm on the way out, he left us.

“Want to join us for lunch?” Priscilla asked Cathy.

No, I silently pleaded, hoping she had other things to do.
